Luxury vinyl flooring has taken the flooring industry by storm, promising durability, affordability, and a stylish look that mimics hardwood or stone. However, one of the biggest questions homeowners ask is: Is luxury vinyl flooring waterproof? The short answer? Yes—but with conditions. While luxury vinyl flooring is designed to handle moisture better than most other flooring types, not all products are created equal. Let's break down what makes luxury vinyl waterproof, where it performs best, and what to watch out for.

Understanding the waterproof properties of LVT and LVP flooring

Luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) is made from multiple synthetic layers, including a waterproof core. This core—often composed of WPC (wood plastic composite) or SPC (stone plastic composite)—prevents water from seeping through. Unlike traditional hardwood or laminate, which can swell or warp when exposed to moisture, LVT and LVP flooring repel water and stay intact.

However, while the material itself is waterproof, the installation process plays a key role in its performance. If seams aren’t properly sealed or water sits on the surface for too long, moisture could slip through gaps and reach the subfloor, causing hidden damage.

Where luxury vinyl flooring excels with water resistance

Luxury vinyl flooring is an ideal choice for high-moisture areas, making it a strong contender for:

Kitchens: Spills and splashes? No problem. LVT and LVP flooring can handle everyday messes with ease.
Bathrooms: Unlike hardwood, luxury vinyl plank won’t warp from shower steam or water exposure.
Basements: Since basements are prone to humidity, luxury vinyl’s waterproof features help prevent mold and mildew issues.
Laundry rooms: No need to worry about leaks or overflows—luxury vinyl can take it.

Where you should be cautious

Even though luxury vinyl is waterproof, it’s not floodproof. If a major water event occurs—such as a burst pipe or severe flooding—water can still seep through the cracks between planks, damaging the subfloor underneath. That’s why it’s important to install luxury vinyl plank correctly and ensure seams are tight to minimize any gaps where water could slip in.

Additionally, standing water shouldn’t sit on the surface for extended periods. While luxury vinyl can withstand spills, it’s best to clean up any liquid quickly to prevent potential subfloor damage or mold growth.

Choosing the right waterproof vinyl flooring

Not all luxury vinyl flooring is created equal. When shopping for waterproof vinyl flooring, look for:

SPC or WPC core: These options provide superior water resistance.
Click-lock or glue-down installation: Proper installation can make a huge difference in preventing water penetration.
High-quality wear layer: The thicker the wear layer, the better the protection against scratches and moisture.
